Project Updates

As with all wind energy developments, a grid connection is required to enable the electricity generated by the proposed wind farm to be transmitted to the national electricity grid, which is operated by EirGrid and supplies electricity across Ireland.

The proposed development includes an on-site 220kV electricity substation (on-site substation) within the wind farm site, along with an underground grid connection linking the site to an off-site 220kV electricity substation (off-site substation). The grid connection would comprise approximately 12.3 kilometres of underground cabling and would be installed mainly within the public road corridor where possible to minimise impacts on private land. Should the project be consented and progress to construction, traffic management measures will be implemented in consultation with the relevant local authorities to minimise disruption.

Based on current design work, the proposed underground 220kV electrical cabling route for the grid connection will exit the proposed on-site substation located on Lodge Bog via an internal access track onto the R414. It will continue along existing public roads, crossing beneath the Grand Canal west of Shee Bridge via Horizontal Directional Drilling. From here, it will continue along the R403, through Allenwood, and turning south along the L6002 at Prosperous to connect to the proposed off-site substation. From this point, it will provide connection to the national grid via a loop-in connection to the existing Maynooth-Dunstown 220kV overhead line.

Bord na Móna has published the revised layout for the proposed Ballydermot Wind Farm.  The revised proposal, for which the company intend to seek planning permission in late 2022, comprises 47 turbines an overall blade tip height ranging from 200 to 220 metres above ground level.  It is also intended to construct a substation to facilitate access to the National Grid for the proposed development.

The proposed Ballydermot Wind Farm will include the construction of new access roads to install and maintain the wind turbines.  As Bord na Móna will seek to utilise these new access roads as a basis for most of the proposed trails for walking, cycling and horse riding, a Draft Amenity Plan has also been published.

For more detail on the proposed amenity plans for this  development, please view the Draft Amenity Plan Map and the Draft Amenity Plan Booklet.

We welcome your feedback on the development of the Draft Amenity Plan. To provide your feedback to the Project Team, please complete and submit either the online or downloadable versions of the Draft Amenity Plan Feedback Questionnaire by Friday 30th September 2022

Subject to Covid-19 restrictions, Bord na Móna intend to hold Community Engagement Clinics in the locality in July and
August. In order to ensure the safety of both our employees and members of the public due to Covid-19, and that all social
distancing requirements and Government health guidelines are adhered to, these Community Engagement Clinics will be
held by appointment only.

If you would like to find out more about the Clinics and avail of an appointment, please contact the clinic Co-Ordinator on 087-9460284 before 20th August. Alternatively, you can complete the expression of interest form.

In advance of these clinics the project team is circulating the following material to homes in the vicinity of the proposed wind farm:

  1. Project Information Booklet
  2. LVIA Photomontage Booklet
  3. An A2 double sided map – outlining the draft layout for the proposed development
  4. A Feedback Questionnaire and a freepost envelope

We will continue to assess the current situation in conjunction with the Governments review of restrictions. With that in mind we hope to be in a position to hold these Community Engagement Clinics in Summer / Autumn 2021 and will provide updates as we have them.

Thank you for your continued patience during these unprecedented times.

In line with the current Government Health Guidelines regarding the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic we have postponed our scheduled Community Engagement Clinics for the proposed Ballydermot Wind Farm.

We will continue to assess the current situation in conjunction with the Governments review of restrictions. With that in mind we hope to be in a position to hold these Clinics in Spring 2021 and will provide updates as we have them.

Thank you for your continued patience during these unprecedented times.

Due to the Level 5 Covid-19 restrictions, Bord na Móna has postponed holding Community Engagement Clinics until January 2021 in Allenwood, Clonbullogue, Derrinturn, Edenderry and Rathangan.

For further details, please see the Public Events section below.

As part of our Community Engagement activities, we have launched a ‘Virtual Consultation Room’.  The Virtual Room is set-up
in a similar style to our traditional public consultation events which we are currently unable to hold due to Covid-19.  The Room
contains information about the proposed Ballydermot Wind Farm in an interactive format.
